What is Microneedling?
Also referred to as skin needling and collagen induction therapy (CIT), microneedling is an effective, minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that is used to correct fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, and pigmentation issues. It is entirely chemical-free, and only utilizes the power of fine needles to stimulate skin renewal and regrowth.
How Does it Work?
Microneedling utilizes the power of controlled wounding to stimulate your body’s own natural process of healing and regeneration. During microneedling treatments, a device that contains many fine needles is passed over the target treatment area. These needles create micro-injuries in the skin. The key to microneedling’s success is that these injuries are small enough to be able to heal quickly and leave no lasting damage or scarring, but large enough to stimulate the body’s process of healing. Once these micro-injuries have been created, healing growth factors are rushed to the treatment site, and the creation of addition collagen and elastin is jump started. Collagen and elastin are both structural proteins that are responsible for how soft, smooth, and tight the skin is.
Because this treatment stimulates skin renewal and healing, it can be used on its own to correct the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scarring, and photoaged skin. It can also be utilized in conjunction with topical growth factors and anti-aging serums to increase their effectiveness.
What Can I Expect from a Microneedling Treatment?
Before treatment begins, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to improve patient comfort. Once this anesthetic has been adequately absorbed by the skin, the microneedle device is passed over the treatment area, creating hundreds of tiny micro injuries. The amount of time this treatment takes and the number of treatments required depend on the area being treated and the extent of damage there. Each treatment is usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with full recovery from each session taking between 3-4 days.
